I tried and could not download to 4.4 from TIA15.1 and had to use v16. The software version need depends on the software version loaded on each PLC. Best is to download and install Simatic Automation Tool and use that to find the software and firmware version on each. Ask the company which put into operation to give you the program and you'll see with what version was developed. If you do not have the program there is aproblem: When you download the program from the PLC to PC the symbols in program are not retained. Also, if the program is protected by password...I do not find any program till now which read the password in TIA Portal So you need the original program for making then the modifications you need.. I have no idea as I install each TIA version on virtual machine by itself. You are likely to end up installing at least two to get to version you need; so best to use VM. I personally use Virtualbox and have been for about four years.
