After exporting emails from my email client, I noticed many duplicate EML files inside the backup folder. Some emails appear multiple times even though I exported the mailbox only a few times. The folder has become difficult to manage and takes up unnecessary storage space. What usually causes duplicate EML files, and what is the safest way to remove them without accidentally deleting important emails?

Duplicate EML emails usually show up after exporting a mailbox because the export process itself often copies everything as-is, without checking for repeats. I noticed this when I moved my old Thunderbird mailbox to EML format.

The same email might end up in folders like Inbox, Sent, and Archive, leading to multiple saves during export. Furthermore, some email clients screw up syncing, which causes duplicates. So, the same stuff gets saved more than once by accident.

Another common reason is incomplete or repeated export sessions. If you export the same mailbox more than once to the same location, duplicates are almost guaranteed.

When I faced this, I used GainTools EML Duplicate Remover to clean things up after export. It helped me quickly remove repeated emails instead of going through them manually.

A simple tip: always export one folder at a time and keep folder-wise backups to avoid confusion later.
