What is FLEXnet Licensing Service?
Runs in Services on Windows XP.
The description says: This service performs licensing function on behalf of FLEXnet enabled products.
To make sure that the person(s) who are using their application has paid a license for it, some software companies use various services/products that let the application check whether or not the user running the application has paid for it.
FLEXnet Licensing Service is one of these.
This service can work in numeroase ways, but it's usually one of these:
When buying a license from the software company, the user recieves a USB-dongle which includes an encrypted key.
The user install the application from the software company along with a license client, or manager.
The USB-dongle with the key must be inserted in the computer at all times if the application is to be used. When launching the application, the application does a call to the license manager and ask it if there is a valid license for this application. Depending on the response it allows you to run the application or not.
Large companies who use an application deployed over many machines with several users can't have many USB-dongles all over the place.
The dongles themselves might be worth a lot and it's not safe having them in each users computer. A way to work around that is by installing a license manager on a central server and recieve a USB-dongle from the software company that has more than 1 license available. Let's say fifteen.
Now, when the application is deployed to computers it is also deployed with a license client that is configured to connect to the central server to get a license -- instead of a USB-dongle.
Larger companies with, usually, home owners often set up their own license server in their own data center and pre-configure their application to connect to this server and verify that the user have a license to use the application.
Of these 3 options, number 3 is most likely your case. You would problably have noticed otherwise.
You can download an application like TCPView v3.05
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437
to check outgoing and incoming connections.
There you will see where FLEXnet Licensing Service is connecting.
HOSTS SETUP example for Adobe:
1: Turn off all internet access.
2: You need to find your existing hosts file so navigate to here (hidden files and folders need to be shown);
Windows 7/Vista/XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
3: In the ETC folder is a file called hosts, open this file with notepad (double click then open with notepad), in notepad the file will look like this;
| Code: | 127.0.0.1 localhost

# Adobe Activation Block v2.

# Any other entries you had go here (new line no # no space); |
4: If you have any information after the;
# ::1 localhost
Then copy all of this information and paste it to a new text document and save it to your desktop.
5: Close the hosts file that you opened with notepad and then rename it to hostsbackup.
6: If you can’t rename the file then you have permission errors so check the following;
A, Check file is not read only (right click hosts & tick the read/write box).
B, Right click the hosts file and select properties, security, edit, your user,
take full control by ticking the full control box, click apply.
In XP to see the security tab do this;
1, Launch Windows Explorer or My Computer.
2, Click on the Tools at the menu bar, then click on Folder Options.
3, Click on View tab.
4, In the Advanced Settings section at the bottom of the list, clear the tick
On the use simple file sharing check box.
5, Click OK.
C, 64bit users start internet explorer or my computer and type;
C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
into the address bar and the hosts will appear.
D, Many firewalls and antivirus software prevent the hosts from being edited or even
change it back again after you have edited it so if you still can’t save the hosts
after all the above steps then restart in safe mode and change it there.
E, Windows 7 users getting error;
Access to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ hosts was denied
or
Cannot create the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file.
Make sure that the path and file name are correct.
follow these steps:
1. Click Start
, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Notepad, and then click Run as administrator.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow or Yes.
2. Open the Hosts file, make the necessary changes, and then click Save on the Edit menu. If using Windows 7, you will need to click Save on the File menu.
7: So now your hosts should be renamed to hostsbackup and now you need to simply copy the hosts from this folder and paste it to the ETC folder.
8: If you had any extra entries from step 4 the open the text document on the desktop and select all then copy. Open your new hosts file with notepad and paste the entries after the # and on a new line;
9: This is the final step, Close all browser windows and open a "Command Prompt" (Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt) type ipconfig /flushdns into the cmd prompt then press Enter then close the Command Prompt.
See here a little video on how you can edit hosts..
