I currently have an Allen-Bradley SLC 5/03 PLC running fine. One of the signals it receives comes from a Mettler Toledo transmitter. This transmitter is connected to several sensors (pH, conductivity, ORP, flow, etc.), six in total. The transmitter sends each sensor’s signal to the PLC through its 4–20 mA outputs, and the PLC performs the necessary calculations with those 4–20 mA signals.

Now, the Mettler Toledo transmitter has been replaced. The new transmitter does not have 4–20 mA outputs; instead, it only provides Ethernet/IP. We want to connect this to the SLC 5/03, which does not have an Ethernet port.

My question: will the 1747-AENTR SLC 500 Ethernet/IP Adapter work if I add it to the architecture, so that the PLC can communicate via Ethernet/IP? Has anyone done a similar upgrade or workaround?

Thanks in advance!

The 1747-AENTR module is installed in place of the SLC processor to make the SLC I/O modules available over the Ethernet IP for ControlLogix or CompactLogix controllers.
If your new transmitter supports Modbus TCP/IP, you can query it via Channel 0 (Modbus RTU Master) of the SLC 503 (OS302 Series C FRN 10). You'll only need a RS-232 to Ethernet gateway like Moxa MGate Series.
