With the help of a camera included in a machine tool system the zero offset of a workpiece can be defined or the workpiece itself can be detected.
The following application describes two different application scenarios for using a camera in a machine tool.
For each of the two scenarios there is an appropriate cycle to successfully implement the project.

1. Determining the workpiece offset
The work offset of a workpiece with respect to a reference workpiece can be determined using a camera (SIMATIC MV440). This solution has the advantage that it takes less time when compared to measuring the position with a probe. This version can be used as long as the accuracy requirements of the solution are relatively low. The precision with which the position is determined using a camera depends on factors such as light, contrast and surface. The accuracy when determining the position is +/- 0.02 mm – and for rotation, +/- 0.2 degrees.

2. Workpiece identification
Using a camera (SIMATIC MV440), you can determine the workpiece involved and the position of the workpiece relative to the camera. The following application describes two different application scenarios for using a camera in a machine tool. For each of the two scenarios there is an appropriate cycle to successfully implement the project.
