Technology cycles are subroutines designed to enable the End-user to execute a task that is often required in a machine tool without the need to write the NC code for such a task. The tasks can include for example, operations such as centering, drilling, boring, threading, face grinding, and pocket milling, to name a few cases from different technologies. There is often times when sets of parameter values for a specific cycle are used repeatedly, for example, when batches of a same part are manufactured non-consecutively. If this is the case, normally the operator must enter the parameters manually every time a new piece is manufactured. In order to save time and prevent errors, the parameter values of Manufacturer- or User- defined cycles can be saved in text files.

To protect technological know-how (intellectual property) by encrypting OEM cycles, the know-how of the machine manufacturer can be protected. This can be implemented using the cycle protection function.

The selected cycle can be encrypted using an external PC. The encrypted cycles are converted into _CPF files. They can be easily loaded and unloaded from the NC of a control system. The execution and can only be realized from a program or in MDI. The encrypted cycles cannot be decrypted; encryption is only one direction.

Using cycle protection, a simple part program can be encrypted and then loaded to the NC of an 840D sl so that the selected part program can be executed.

The task of cycle protection is to implement cryptic coding of cycles or programs. The selected cycle is encrypted on an external PC using the SinuCom Protector program, and then loaded into the control where it is protected. As a result of the encryption, the cycle is assigned the extension _CPF (Coded Program File). The cycle can be executed in the NC without any restrictions, although the program cannot be viewed. The encrypted cycle can be copied, and therefore used on additional machines.
