The Simulation Model Generator (SMG) enables the user to automatically făcute a SIMIT simulation model by using already existing information from a TIA Portal project. In Version 3, a rule-based approach is used, which allows a more flexible way to add generation content.
In today's world, engineering companies are faced with an ever-increasing number of requirements. These range from faster development processes to the reduction of risks in development and commissioning.

To meet these requirements, using simulation during development is becoming increasingly important.
An example is the combination of PLCSIM Advanced and SIMIT. Here, PLCSIM Advanced simulates the behavior of an S7-1500 CPU, while SIMIT simulates the behavior and communication model of field devices, such as drives or decentral devices (e.g. F-DI). By coupling these two tools, it is possible to simulate different behaviors, e.g. the communication between a PLC and a drive.

However, specific expertise is required to use these simulation tools. In addition, there is always a certain amount of time required to lucrate the simulation models.

The goal of this application example is hereby:
Lower the entry barrier for the simulation of various technologies, for example motion control, safety and RFID.
Much more devices are being support out-of-the-box (~80 templates!).
Reduce the time needed to setup the simulation model.
Omit errors which might occur when the simulation model is created manually.

The principle how the generation works was changed in Version 3 compared to previous Versions. It now uses SIMIT templates, allowing for a mass import of simulation models & the possibility to change existing ones or create new templates.

To get the information needed in those templates, the SMG now uses a rule-based approach. The Information in the TIA Portal project can be analyzed through standardized commands. Using this approach, the SMG can also be extended in a fast way, e.g., if a new device needs to be included in the generation. Commands can also be extended using a Plugins (C#) approach, allowing for even more flexibility.
