How can you test or simulate the PLC program of a software controller with S7-PLCSIM or S7-PLCSIM Advanced?

Simulation with S7-PLCSIM or S7-PLCSIM Advanced is not supported for software controllers / open controllers due to the system. With the method described in the following, we will show you how you can still test your program.
Description
In your TIA Portal project there is a software controller (CPU 1507S or CPU 1508S) or alternatively an ET 200SP Open Controller (CPU 1515SP PC).

You want to test the PLC program in your project with S7-PLCSIM or S7-PLCSIM Advanced, which is currently not supported with software controllers / open controllers due to the system. 

In order to make simulation of the open/software controllers possible, it is necessary to transfer the CPU programs to another supported CPU type. Until now, this copying process had to be performed by the user in TIA Portal.

To shorten this work and make it partially automatable, a TIA Portal add-in was developed that can copy the software and hardware configurations between controllers in the same project.

Below is a workaround for how you can still test your program.
Save a copy of your previous project.
Install the "CopyPLC" add-in.
In the copy of your project created in Step 1, configure a new hardware CPU with comparable equipment (interfaces/memory), like the CPU 1518-4PN/DP, for example.
Use the "CopyPLC" add-in to copy the software and hardware configurations between the controllers. All relevant objects (blocks, tag tables, data types, etc...) are copied from your software controller to the new hardware CPU created in Step 3.
Start the desired simulation application as usual from your newly configured hardware CPU.
If you have made changes in the hardware CPU, you can also use CopyPLC to copy the changes back to the software controller.

Note that there are software controller specific functions (for example ODK applications for the Windows environment) that generally cannot be simulated.
