The SIMATIC RF1100R readers provide the option of using employee identification cards also when operating machines. With an appropriate configuration, the data on the transponders/cards can be encrypted and read only by those devices that have the appropriate key. This allows finely graded access concepts to be implemented.

Problem
An automation system needs to implement access protection with RFID cards in order to prevent operator error and consequent interruptions to the production process.
An RF1140R/RF1170R reader must read the serial number (UID) and user-defined memory ranges (tag fields) on a card and transmit them to a LOGO! system via the communication interface of the programmable controller. These data make it possible to realize conditions for access authorization (or approvals in the system) within the LOGO! system.

User management can be implemented either centrally in the LOGO! system; or it can be distributed in the cloud.

Solution
The following functions are implemented in the application example:
Project engineering and configuration of the SIMATIC RF1170R reader.
Link the SIMATIC RF1170R reader to the LOGO! 8 via Modbus TCP.
Configuration of the Modbus client connection.
Display of the readout data (UID or tag fields) in the LOGO! WBM or in the LOGO! Web Editor (LWE).
