Hello RSD16,
Simatic PCS 7 is a separate Siemens product.
It's true that in PCS7 V8.0 SP2 Siemens included on WinCC7.2 (also in winCC7.3) drivers for connecting to S7-1200 and s7-1500.
PCS7 is a mature product and probably Siemens will continued to use because there are too much packages installed in the World which will need assistance in the year to come.
TIA Portal comes in a different package because WinCC 7.2 from PCS7 8.0 and winCC Professional from TIA V12, V13 are still incompatible.
It's true that Siemens made great efforts to migrate old hardware products to TIA Portal but this takes time.
My opinion is finally these two products will emerge to one package but we have to wait because it's a huge amount of software and hardware which need to be made compatible. |

Hi rott,
Thanks for the reply.
It was very confusing for me. But is all clear now.
The PCS7 system it self is also very confusing. I am trying to learn about the PCS7 by first trying to download the PCS7 software and by looking for beginners documentation. Which i still find very difficult to understand, because they describes very complex system to understand for beginners.
Even documentation published by Siemens seems to difficult to understand.
Is there a location on this forum were i can find a very easy to follow documentation for beginners.
Regards,
Thanks |

Hello RSD16,
What you have to know from to start is that PCS7 is developed around S7-400 PLC. Using S7-400 it can be developed a plant hierarchy and it is closed to CFC which can be used on large extent as a Master Library.
In fact you have firstly to learn and understand well Step7 v5.5 and WinCC 7.0, 7.1,7.2,7.3 with the mode of using faceplates and so on.
After you understand these two main pieces of PCS7 then it's easier to try to develop projects in PCS7.
You have on these two topics some hints.
http://plc.myforum.ro/how-towhere-to-start-with-siemens-vt2670.html
http://plc.myforum.ro/sitrain-pcs7-vt4928.html
Also at PCS7 topics I put along the time a lot of examples took from Siemens site with direct target for new users who try to learn, especially for students at Faculty of Electronics but not only.
So PCS7 is the "classic" control of the processes which is a mature product and will be also used about a decade after my opinion.
I warn you that you have to use a gradient of learning because if you go directly to PCS7 it could be a demobilizing process
because when you feel you do not understand the first way out is to quit the learning process.
The TIA Portal started few years ago by software strategist from SIEMENS as an adaptation to the new trends on Operating Systems and to make more intuitive the programming process.
Hope I was clear enough for understanding.
I have to say to you that It took me about three years to develop by myself and put into operation a project in PCS7, and also you have to have a solid background on C and VB programming.
A good chance is if you have a colleague which accept to work with him on such real projects but I know it's difficult.
So I wish you a happy learning........ |

Thanks again rott,
That is a lot of information and directions.
I have TIA 12 installed on my laptop and did some sample projects (S7 and Wincc) with it. I have never had the chance to work on a S7 or Wincc real time projects before.
And now i want to start with PCS7 and thanks to you i have an idea how to start.
Regards. |
