Sequential Muting of a Light Curtain with S7-1500
Access to the assembly cell is to be protected with a safety light curtain. The objective is to detect in case of a violation of the detection zone (interruption of light curtain) if a workpiece is transported through the light curtain or if it was interrupted by another object.

So-called “muting” is used to distinguish if the protective field is violated by the transport of workpieces or by other reasons. Muting is the intentional suppression of the protective function of light curtains
- the light curtain is “muted” temporarily. For this purpose, muting sensors are installed on both sides of the light curtain which determine in which cases to activate muting. This allows transporting workpieces out of the work area without interrupting the production flow and at the same time monitoring access to the hazard area.
Figure 1
Figure 2 schematically shows the most important components of the application example:
SIMATIC F-CPU (IO controller)
Distributed I/O SIMATIC ET 200SP (IO device) with DI, DQ, F-DI, F-DQ
SICK safety light curtain
SICK photoelectric retro-reflective sensors as muting sensors
Figure 2
Sequential muting with 4 muting sensors (2 sensor pairs) is implemented in the application example. Photoelectric retro-reflective sensors are used as muting sensors.

Access monitoring using a light curtain with two-hand operation and emergency stop to SIL 3 or PL e with a 3SK2 safety relay
https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/document/109485648/access-monitoring-using-a-light-curtain-wi
To monitor access to an open danger zone, so-called non-contact protective equipment such as a light curtain can be used. If the light beam is interrupted, a shutdown signal is triggered.
To enable safe operation of the actuator, two-hand operation is used. This prevents the operator from reaching into the danger zone during operation.
Operating principle
The light curtain consists of a send unit and a receive unit. Between the two is the protective zone. If the light beam is not interrupted, outputs OSSD1 and OSSD2 carry voltage and are evaluated by the safety relay. When the light beam is interrupted, the two outputs switch off and the safety relay opens the enabling circuits, switching off the power contactors in a safety-related manner.
In addition, simultaneous actuation of the two-hand operation console prevents the operator from reaching into the danger zone. The 3SK2 safety relay only switches the enabling circuits when both signals are active within 500 ms, the light beam of the light curtain is uninterrupted, and the feedback circuit is closed.
If one of the two pushbuttons is released, the 3SK2 safety relay immediately switches the machine off in a safety-related manner.
The four-channel design in the two-hand operation console ensures that possible welding of one of the contacts is detected immediately.
The plant is also switched off in a safety-related manner after operation of both emergency stop command Units.

Safety: Light curtain SIMATIC FS400 with muting in F-CPU, in category 4 according to EN 954-1: 1996 (with evaluation according to EN 62061 and EN ISO 13849-1: 2006)

Inside an industrial plant often has areas that, for safety reasons, are not allowed to enter human beings at times. For example, all parts of the human body have been subjected to the internal zone of a press during the deceleration. Search controls are often realized by light curtains.
At specific times, an intended suppression of the protective function may be required (eg during transporting the material into the danger zone). This so-called muting mode is triggered by muting sensors.
The light curtain SIMATIC FS400, which is connected to a fail-safe input module of the ET 200S. A failsafe SIMATIC S7-CPU (F-CPU), in which standard program and safety program run on a coexistent basis, evaluates [img]the signals. The muting mode is implemented in the F-CPU.
