This new method of thread cutting allows manufacture thread profile with reduced energy consumption. The machining time can be reduced by 75% for each thread.
Punch tapping is a new method of thread cutting. The Punch tap tool has no continuous thread profile. Instead two twisted row of teeth are off-set to each other by 180°. The tool moves into the predrilled tap hole at lightning speed on a steep helical path where two twisted grooves - so called helical grooves - are generated on the circumference of the hole by two broaching teeth located at the head of the tool. Afterwards the spindle turns by 180°, the axial feed axis moves synchronously by half a pitch - and the thread is completely machined. The machining time can usually be reduced by 75% for each thread through this new technology. The expression "Punch Tap" was derived from punching in boxing, which describes a quick and short thrust of the fist. The new technology was developed jointly by Emuge-Franken and Audi as a new manufacturing process up to the point of operational use. This new technology is suitable for certain materials. To simplify the parameter assignment, programming support has been created via RunMyScreen.
