Hello spearss91,
If you want to follow a career on PLC and not only there are some "must learn":
1. You have to learn C and subsequently C++ because this is the "mother and father" of other languages and is largely used on most HMI scripting.
2.You also have to learn VBasic Scripts because combined with C are at the basis of all the HMIs scripting.
Regarding the IDE (Integrated Development Environment) to use for beginners is easier to use MingW or Eclipse which you can download for free.
It's true that Eclipse is a little bit more complicated to learn but is largely used by most of the Universities because in combination with some Hardware Kits (Computer on a Board) is the most efficient way for learning.
Regarding the other IDEs of course most of the Companies (SIEMENS, AB, Schneider, etc..) using the Windows Operating System used of course the Visual Studio from Microsoft.
From C you can easily derive on C#, Java and so on...
With VB is more intuitive to use for accessing the computer resources(files, HDDs, screen, keyboard..) but you can also done with C.
So this is the point to start.
See that even Microsoft offer some free IDEs for learning.
Also an alternative is C/C++ Builder from Embarcadero (former Borland) for learning but regarding the languages the priority remains the same...
