hi,

i have some issues concern connection of pc with an s5.
First of all i don't have native com port, i use an usb-rs232 adapter. when i try to access the plc it doesn't communicate. the rx or tx leds are off. even without plc.
i use this interface:
pg2000 pg2000

the software just freeze and i need to kill the service. the settings of com port is default.

what i'm doing wrong ?

christensen,
This above schematic is probably good but if your USB->RS232 Adapter is not galvanically isolated you have a problem because the Voltage level from USB and RS232 are different.
Then you have the following choices
1.Or you buy a USB->RS232 Adapter with galvanic isolation and use the actual interface as in
http://www.bb-elec.com/Products/USB-Connectivity/USB-to-Serial-Adapters/In-line-USB-to-Serial-Converters/USO9ML2.aspx
http://www.bb-elec.com/Products/USB-Connectivity/USB-to-Serial-Adapters.aspx
2. Or use a RS232->S5 interface with galvanic isolation as below:

pg2000 pg2000

and keep the USB->RS232 Adapter
3. Buy a ready made cable..see below
http://www.traeger.de/simatic-s5-interfacekabel/simatic-s5-interfacekabel-pg-kabel-rs232-tty-usb-tty.html

I've tried another usb-ttl and add the schematic below to make galvanic separation but still doesn't work.

now it access the plc but cannot read or write to it.

this error messages i've get:

Please read carefully
For RS232 has been agreed that a high signal is transmitted through a negative voltage of -12 V, a low signal by a positive voltage of +12 V.In S5, the speed is 9600 baud. (9600 bits per second).

pg2000 pg2000
For TTY, a distinction between active and passive
Participants. Within each current loop must one only
connected device the required loop current
20 mA supply. This unit is called active, but passive.
The Siemens PGs have an active TTY port.
pg2000 pg2000
The following diagram shows the pin assignment of the AG interface
to a SIMATIC S5 controller. the Supply voltage and signal lines
floating.
pg2000 pg2000
The kit described below acts as a passive participants. There are the power sources of the AG Schnittstelle
are brought out at pin 11 and 13, tapped
and optocouplers to the signal input pin 9 - or to
Pin 6 - then the Singanlausgang Pin 7 to ground placed.
pg2000 pg2000
The heart of the circuit is the V.24 transmitter / receiver
MAX 232 CPE. It has two built-in internal Voltage converter according to the principle of the charge pump the voltages of +9 V and -9 V from a single +5 VSpannungsquelle produce.
The MAX232 has four level converter. Two of them are V.24
Drivers that the TTL / CMOS input level to V.24
Implement output voltages of ± 9 V. The other two
Level converters are V.24 receivers V.24 the / Implement voltage level to TTL CMOS input level.
pg2000 pg2000
The power supply part of the MAX 232 consists of two Charge pumps. The first uses the external capacitor C1 to double the input voltage of +5 V to +10 V with an output impedance of 200 ohms. The second
Charge pump uses the second external capacitor C3 for inverting the +9 V to -9 V with a Total output impedance of 450 ohms.
pg2000 pg2000
The V.24 signal from the PC is on the IC pin 13 in a 5 V signal
converted at pin 12. The resulting 5 V voltage switched through the resistor R3 through the transistor T1. The LED in optocoupler OK1 lit then and switches turn the 20 mA current source of the PLC interface (pin 13)
on the TTY - input (Pin 9).
The LED V1, which is installed in series with shows a later Write to the PLC on.
Will send to the PC data to the PLC, this is done via
a bridge of 20 mA current source (Pin 11 to Pin 6) and
the switching through of the transmission transistor in the CPU.
The TxD Singal comes from the PLC interface (pin 7) an LED on the optocouplers OK2. This turns on and turns the transistor T2, which in turn, a high signal on the resistor R1 at the input 11 of the MAX 232 causes.
This high signal is from the MAX232 in a V.24 signal converted and output at Pin 14 (-9V = RS232 High).
The LED in series with optocouplers OK2 shows a later Write from the PLC to the connected PC.

Dear friends,
I was in a similar situation with you few years ago.
My laptop has no serial port, only USB.
I observe that you trying to realizate electronic devices...
Don't waste your time.
A good solution, tested by myself and my friends, is an good quality USB-RS232 converter + the TTY converter that you already posted.
Price for that coverter is arround 27EURO.
The USB-RS232 converter used by me is produced by FTDI company.
Search for a local distributor of their products and buy one.
The next link show you what I use.
US232R-10 De lux USB-Serial Converter:
https://shop.clickandbuild.com/cnb/shop/ftdichip?productID=55&op=catalogue-product_info-null&prodCategoryID=293

http://www.ftdichip.com/Products/Cables/USBRS232.htm
For me, this combination was successful always to communicate with S5 equipments.
Today I observe that the company produce also USB-TTY converters, but I have no experience with that product.
