Romanian authorities have arrested five individuals suspected of having committed a series of cyber attacks targeting entities in the European Union and the United States, Europol announced.
"In the past week, the Romanian authorities arrested three individuals suspected of infecting cybernetic systems by transmitting a CTB-Locker virus (...). Two other suspects in the same criminal group were arrested in Bucharest in a parallel investigation with links to the United States, "Europol said in a statement.
During the Operation "Bakovia", six buildings were searched in Romania, in a joint investigation conducted by the Romanian Police, prosecutors from Romania and the Netherlands, the Dutch Police, the British Crime Agency, the Federal Investigation Office US (FBI) and Europol.
Until now, authorities have detected over 170 European victims of cyber attacks committed by this group, Europol says.
Two members of the criminal group are suspected of having committed cyber attacks on systems in the United States using the Cerber virus.
