Like most Controls Engineers, I'm primarily an Allen-Bradley guy. I've dabbled in GE and Mitsubishi, but the programming software seems less developed than Rockwell's. I haven't seen anything that really beats Rockwell's ladder editor.

But, I hear good things about Siemens and since that's the major player outside the U.S., I'm curious as to what I need to get to know this platform. I do have a few questions.

Rockwell/AB has a few different PLC lines for different applications. So my first question is, what would be the Siemens equivalents to Micrologix, Compact Logix, and Control Logix be?

Which programming software goes with what? Is it one application for everything or is it like A-B where you have RSLogix 500, Studio 5000, CCW, etc.

I know that with Siemens you typically use Profibus and Profinet instead of DF1 and Ethernet/IP. How do these compared in setup? Is Profibus/Profinet easier? Harder?

Is ladder the primary language for Siemens controllers or is it Structured Text or something else?

My opinion is that SIEMENS Automation is far better than Allen Bradley.
With Siemens Automation you can program in all PLC languages LAT,FBD,SCL,STL with ODK in C/C++ VBS....
and have all Simotion/Sinumerik applications at your hands and almost programs in all Industries with AddOns
Install Simatic Net for Communications .. keep in mind...
You can install TIA V15.1 or TIA V16 (find in forum) and you'll be able to program PLCs and HMIs from the same Environment.
Older System Step7 Professional 2017 and WinCC V7.5 SP2 are respectively PLC and SCADA environment on separate IDEs..
As DCS you can use PCS7 9.0 SP1,SSP2,SP3 or the latest PCS7 V9.1.
Start with TIA V15.1 or V16 for the first contact..
Indeed Profibus and Profinet are the basics protocols for communications but you have a lot of possibilities to work with Modbus, E/IP even DF1 with adapters....

Find some med. on

If you have more questions ... just ask....
Enjoy learning...

Hello,

I didn't see an issue reported on your previous post. but asking for opinions.

However my opinion:

1. Controls series
1.1 Micrologix = Logo
1.2 Compact Logix = S7-1200
1.3 Control Logix = S7-1500

2. Programming Languages
2.1 There is no primary programming language, all of them share same functions. However some of the very excepțional functions are limited to language type.
2.2 Lower series such as points 1.1 & 1.2 support LD, FB, ST, IL
2.3 Higher control series support everything from IEC 61131-3 to VB and C and so on.

3. Controls interface (ProfiNet, ProfiSafe - primary these days)
3.1 There is not much differences, everything is set down to bits, bytes and words.
3.2 Speed. Profinet RT provide some very fast communication giving one controller depend on its series to control numeroase Cartesian system, plus ability to simulate in 3D prior commissioning.

4. Programming environment
4.1 Studio 5000 = TIA Portal V15, 16
4.2 CCW = Logo Soft

5. System advance
5.1 My opinion is, Siemens is lot more advance in accordance of all the control area coverage across the industries.

I hope this will give you some initial guide.

Thanks
