Hello dani_val,
For having success with learning SCL you must learn ANSI C because it becomes very simple to extrapolate to SCL. Or start learning Pascal which also help on STL.
My opinnion is to exercise with ANSI C (find programming books and environment IDE on this forum) and exercises with examples and learn from precedent post.
Some sources:
1. This is a project with Step7 examples from the SCL Book of Hans Berger.
You can find some basic functions created with SCL.

2, Go to
http://www.oscat.de/downloadmanager/viewcategory/3.html and download a lot of functions written on SCL which guide you on how to program on SCL.
3. Use Retrieve and open in PCS7 V7.1 SP3 or convert on later PCS7
to see how you have to program in SCL in PCS7 Environment. This is for advanced programmers but everything has a start.
There are some Functions programmed in SCL from which was generated the CFC with which you can also can make testing and simulation directly on CFC environment.
This is an excellent starting point project for learning advanced programming on PCS7 and further development.
From this project you can generate also Master Libraries and generates Faceplates from CFCs.
This project is only a very little part from a bigger project but for learning is sufficient.

Good luck. |

| Thanks you very much for the information. Is is really useful. So, I will follow your advice and start learning Ansi C. But I have a question. Is SCL more powerful than AWL? It worst the effort to learn it? |

dani_val,
STL/LAD/FBD it's the same ..you can use on standard programming...but..
When it come about working on a PCS7 project where you have to use advanced programming and use of the CFCs and derived faceplates on WinCC then you have to use SCL. Also with this language you can access and manipulate data that you cannot access with the other languages.
When you will really understand C then you'll figured out exactly what is the difference.
As I said before in a topic you have to learn ANSI C for exploiting the entire access to databases and CPU hardware and VB Scripts for accessing all the computer resources (keyboard. screens, so on) because with these two languages you have a full access to all functions on WinCC.
Here is an example which might have been better understood.
Open in PCS7.1 SP3 or SP4
http://www.datafilehost.com/d/48a0302f
So if you are going to be involved in advanced programming with PCS7 then SCL is a "must". With SCL you can write program modules to be used on the entire projects or on another projects..and to generate CFCs which is a "must" in advanced control.
So STL/LAD/FBD is for standard basic programming.
SCL is a must on PCS7 for manipulation and transmission of large amount
of data ...but not only..you can program in SCL and you'll see Step7 will generate FB or FC compiled blocks on the Bloks Folder from your programming source on SCL.
Hope I make myself clear... . |

REMEMBER:
SCL is a combination between ANSI C and Pascal.
Not all instructions from C as also not all instructions from Pascal are available on programming with SIEMENS SCL because when these languages was written everyone was destined for general purpose computer programming. When use PLC the CPUs for PLCs has some limitations regarding functions with access to the other resources of a computer .. because these CPUs do not need to access it and the way the program is running on a PLC CPU is slightly different from one on the standard computer..
