Usually PILZ PLCs are used for Safety Supply Sources on Automation Systems.
Safety Systems (from SIEMENS as example) are used on sensitive automation systems Process Control Automation where reliability is a major concern...that means if a channel on a PLC Card (Analog, Digital..)has broken down the other channel take over it's functionality. Please read more on SIEMENS Site for example about S7F Systems
