For an S7-1200 CPU with V3.0 and higher and for an S7-1500 CPU with firmware V1.1 and higher it is also possible to perform a firmware update via the integrated web server. In order to perform a firmware update you have to configure the CPU in STEP 7 (TIA Portal) as follows:
1. Enable web server of the CPU
In the project navigation you right-click the PLC folder and select the "Properties..." item in the pop-up menu that opens.
Click the "Web server" item in the area navigation of the CPU Properties and enable the "Activate web server on all modules of this device" option in the right window under "General".

2. Configure web server users (not necessary for S7-1200 CPU < firmware V4.0)
In the Properties of the web server you select "User management".
Enter the user name and password for the user login to be prepared.
Open the access level setting via the drop-down menu.
Select the access level "The user is authorized to..." "perform a firmware update".
Confirm the settings with the "green check mark" and close the dialog with "OK".
Save and compile the device configuration and download your program into the CPU.

3. Perform firmware update
Unpack the compressed file of the firmware in a directory on your hard disk.
Open your internet browser and enter the IP address of your CPU in the address bar.
Log in if necessary with the user name and password chosen under point 2.2.
Open the menu item "Module information".
Select the station name of the CPU (here: "S7-1200 station_1").
Mark the slot of the CPU.
Open the "Firmware" tab.
Use the "Browse..." button to navigate to the directory on your hard disk where you have stored the update files. In the "FWUPDATE.S7S" file you must select the file with the extension ".upd".
Then click the "Run update" button to start the updating.
Confirm the operating mode transition to "STOP" to perform the update.
During the update do NOT leave the web page of the CPU!
After the firmware has been successfully downloaded to the CPU, a corresponding message is displayed.
Click OK to put the CPU into the RUN mode.
