Hi,
i have a PLC allen bradley SLC500/5 connected through ethernet with a SCADA system.
Apparently the plc is limited a single ethernet connection.

Does anyone know how to increase the number of ethernet connections for this Plc??

best regards :-) :-) :-) :-)

SLC500/5 ethernet connections

Knowledge Base response:
With SLC 5/05 Series C Hardware and a minimum of OS501 Ser C FRN 9 Firmware, additional EtherNet connections for each processor memory size:
- 1747-L551 -- 32 global connections
- 1747-L552 -- 48 complet connections
- 1747-L553 -- 64 total connections
What is a connection?
A connection is the means to send data on Ethernet from one device to another.
Is there limitations of the number of connections?
Yes, the SLC 5/05 (FRN 5.16, series C) processor supports a maximum of 24 connections.
However, the number of connections vary based on the controller memory.
The connections are broken down as follows:
For a 1747-L551 Processor:
Total number of connections is equal to 16.
4 dedicated for incoming messages from four unique devices with unique IP addresses.
4 dedicated for outgoing messages to four unique devices with unique IP addresses.
8 for incoming or outgoing messages as needed.

For a 1747-L552 or 1747-L553 Processor:
Total number of connections is equal to 24.
4 dedicated for incoming messages from four unique devices with unique IP addresses.
4 dedicated for outgoing messages to four unique devices with unique IP addresses.
16 for incoming or outgoing messages as needed.

Note: If 5/05 'A' sends a MSG to 5/05 'B', 'A' uses one outgoing connection and 'B' uses one incoming connection. All subsequent MSGs sent by 'A' to 'B' use this same connection, as long as the "Inactivity Timer" in 'A' has not expired.
If 'B' initiates a MSG to 'A', 'B' then uses an outgoing connection and 'A' an incoming connection.
If this MSG from 'B' to 'A' were a Write MSG for example, it would be more "connection efficient" to have sent a Read MSG from 'A' to 'B', utilizing the connection between them that already existed, therbye not creating the additional connections in each processor.
Writing data from 'B' to 'A' is effectively the same as reading the same data from 'A' to 'B'.

Is there a way to look at the number of connections on a processor, such as, status bits or with RSLinx?
Yes, the firmware level that supports this is OS501 Series C Firmware 3.
Channel 1 diagnostic file contains the number of outgoing and incomming connections. G18680- Extended SLC5/05 Channel 1 Diagnostic File Data for OS501 Series C FRN5 explains each of the diagnosic words available.

How are connections counted by a processor?
Connections are directional, bi-directional communication count as 1 connections per processor.
Example: A read and write message is contained in processor #1 gathering info from processor #2.
The number of connections in each processor would be 1.
Reasoning:
The write message (from 1 to 2) must first open an outgoing connection in processor #1, the receiving processor #2 must open an incoming connection.
The read message (from 1 to 2) and all subsequent messages sent by 1 to 2, will utilize the existing connection.
Note:
The outgoing connection will be shared, if numeroase messages use the same destination IP address.

How can I limit the number of connections to a processor?
Increase data packet sizes by consolidating data files to be sent, ethernet has a large bandwidth more data can be sent without compromising throughput.
Reduce HMI data as much as possible.
Scan rates need not be faster than 500ms for display data.
Use unsolicited messages to report by exception, rather than constantly polling the SLC for status information. Use RSLinx Client-Server capabilities so that only one main server is polling information while multiple clients are using the information.
Use Data Concentrators to minimize messaging to processors, provided no more than 20 processors need to send messages to the data concentrator.
Remember that each computer using an RSWho will initiate and maintain a connection to every processor listed in the Ethernet driver definition.
Utilizing existing connections, rather than creating new ones between processors, by having the processor with the existing outgoing connection initiate a READ/WRITE MSG, instead of having the processor with the incoming connection send a WRITE/READ MSG respectively. The latter will use up another connection in each processor, while the former will utilize the existing connection between processors.

Maybe you can try with this product ANC-100e, from Automation Networks.

It is another way to connect a SLC5/04 to Ethernet.

This is there website:
