However, the disadvantage for these precisely designed (I/O) stations is that each station that is equipped with options and expansions, always has to be reconfigured. Apart from the additional configuration effort, further costs therefore arise for the construction, wiring and documentation of each variant. A significantly easier approach would be achieved with the following items: Only one hardware configuration for different levels of configuration. Only one user program for different levels of configuration. The option handling is the solution approach for the described task within SIMATIC. For modular machine concepts, for example, in series machine building, option handling offers savings potential for the creation, commissioning and documentation. So far, this has only been possible with the distributed IO systems ET 200S and ET 200pro. The options available have become wider thanks to an expanded ET 200 product portfolio, and new firmware V4.1 (S7-1200) and V1.6 (S7-1500), respectively. A precise adjustment of the station to the plant and the modularization of hardware and software are no longer a contradiction with these modules in connection with the integrated option handling. This way, hardware and engineering costs can be continued to be minimized effectively. The documentation describes the basics of the configuration control. The code applies the individual option handling methods in a targeted way.
