Hi all,
I am looking for some advice from some more (much more) learned PLC uses than myself. The last time I used PLC's was 1999 with some GEFanuc 90-30's.

I have some PLC's that were obtained for my company so that some of our staff could learn to program them, as we have some of the same type on-site carrying out various tasks. What has been procured is as follows :-

1. Logix 5332E Processor Unit, 1769-L32E Ser.A, Firmware Revision 1.15

2. Power Supply, 1769-PA4 Ser.A Rev.4

3. ProSoft MV169-MCM, Firmware Revision 1.1

4. 16pt Input Module 1769-IQ16 Ser.A, Firmware Revision 3.1

5. 16pt Sourcing Output Module 1769-OB16 Ser.B, Firmware Revision 3.1

What I would like to know is what version of software I need to obtain to get going with this particular setup. I have got RSLogix V30, thinking it is probably better to get the most up-to-date software, however I cannot see the processor type listed in 'start a new project'. Therefore I am now thinking I should have got an earlier revision, especially from what I have read and think I've understand regarding specific firmware versions.

Any help would be appreciated, especially as I am a complete newb at Rockwell PLC's and pretty much a newb full-stop when taking account of the length of time since my previous foray into PLC's. If anyone is able to offer advise on which version of RSLinx I may need as well, I would appreciate a steer here as well.

Thanks

Hi tanner,

Thank you for your speedy reply, its much appreciated. I like the point of 'your first problem', I had guessed this would be a slow step by step learning.

The firmware revision that I read was what was on the label on the processor module. Very blonde question but, how do I check exactly which firmware? I'm assuming I need to link to the processor?, with what software?, do I use RSWho?, and if so is this the RSWho that is with the RSLogix or a separate version?

Thanks also for the 2 first and latest firmware revisions. I'll keep them handy in case I need them.

Hi tanner,

Thanks for the additional info, again appreciated.

I am currently working nights until the end of this week, so probably won't get to play until the weekend, so my reply may not be for several days. I shall absorb the info in readiness.

Thanks

Hi tanner,

Just so you don't think I had forgotten you or couldn't be bothered to reply........... I became short of time due to the Christmas build up.

During this time of not actually doing anything constructive, I used the time to think over your information. In the end I decided I might cause some damage to the PLC rack that I have if I attempted re-flashing (being new to all this), so instead I opted for downloading and installing V15, which I figured should be compatible with my CPU. That way I thought I could get connected in the simplest way and then use the software and play with different aspects to become more confident and familiar overall. Then, maybe later if it was beneficial I would move onto the higher version and re-flash the CPU

So, I decided to delete the V30 software and install the V15. This may have been a miscalculation on my part, as it appears (from what I read and the installation stopping during install) that V15 will not install on a Win 7 Pro 64 bit machine.

Nothing appears to be straight forward anymore!! I guess I'll have to have a bit more of a think about this.

Seasonal regards
