No week after the most virulent IT attack this year, Florin Talpeş (60) speaks of his own as a little one from his minimalist office on Delea Veche Street in Bucharest.
Survivors might say that WannaCry, the worm that infected 230,000 computers in 150 states (including in Romania), is an opportunity for a security software vendor.
For Talpeş, the attack by which unknown criminals have asked individual victims to pay up to $ 17,000 to unlock infected documents is just business as usual.

"Ransomware (the technical name of the software that spread panic across the globe, n.r.) exploded last year," says Talpeş, CEO of a company that customers pay to "guess" the dangers before they become reality.

Redemption demanded by attackers increased, on average, from nearly $ 300 in 2015 to $ 1,077 last year, according to a study by Symantec's US security firm, quoted by The Economist.
"2016 was the year of ransomware," says another study signed this t
ime by Bitdefender itself, with Romanian specialists estimating the global damage caused by these attacks to over one billion dollars. "Developers of a certain type of ransomware have managed to raise $ 1.5 million in just a week," says Cătălin Coşoi, head of Bitdefender's Cyber Investigation Team.

FT. Coșoi(security software engineer) was alongside Talpeş, the company's star in the week after the attack.
His views appeared in a first page article in the May 16 edition of the Financial Times. "We think the" WannaCry authors "are amateurs," Coșoi said, mistaking some assumptions that Russian hackers, US secret services, or the government of Pyongyang would be behind the attack.
Also on May 16, the Financial Times also publishes a podcast (audio report) about Romanian success (read Bitdefender's success) in cyber security.

Scranos: New Rapidly Evolving Rootkit-Enabled Spyware Discovered
A new powerful rootkit-enabled spyware operation has been discovered wherein hackers are distributing multifunctional malware disguised as cracked software or trojanized app posing as legitimate software like video players, drivers and even anti-virus products.
While the rootkit malware—dubbed Scranos—which was first discovered late last year, still appears to be a work in progress, it is continuously evolving, testing new components and regularly making an improvement to old components, which makes it a significant threat.
Scranos features a modular esteticÄƒ that has already gained capabilities to steal login credentials and payment accounts from various popular services, exfiltrate browsing history and cookies, get YouTube subscribers, display ads, as well as download and execute any payload.
According to a 48 page in-depth report Bitdefender shared with The Hacker News prior to its release, the malware gains persistence on infected machines by installing a digitally-signed rootkit driver.

Bitdefender decryptor for Fonix Ransowmare
A decryptor for Fonix Ransowmare is now available for download. Also known as FonixCrypter or Xinof, this family of malware was initially spotted in June 2020 and went out of business in late January this year. The news, broken by one of the project’s administrators, also includes master keys and a bare-bones decryptor that can potentially be used to recover one file at a time.

Bitdefender decryptor for GoGoogle (aka BossiTossi) ransomware
Spotted in April 2020, GoGoogle ransomware has several peculiarities.
First of all, it is written in Golang, a programming language that has grown popular among ransomware creators as of late. Secondly, the two versions of GoGoogle use two special encryption methods, depending on the size of the files to be encrypted. While one version exclusively uses XOR-based encryption, the other uses XOR for files larger than 1MB and RSA 1024 for smaller files.
This decryptor currently solves infections for .google files encrypted with the XOR method. An updated decryptor to become available in the future will handle the RSA 1024 scenario as well.

There were situations in which we had ransomware operators with first and last name, because we managed in the investigations to locate them very well in the countries where they lived.
Up to the number of the street they lived on, because they make mistakes too.
Unfortunately Europol and Interpol tried to extradite them.

Impossible! No authority in the former Soviet Union wants to investigate citizens for an alleged ransomware attack in the European Union, the United States or elsewhere.
They are not interested and do not cooperate and this makes the whole industry proliferate. Hackers have a very interesting mechanism to make sure they don't hit home.
Most ransomware families do not run on IPs in that area, in the CIS. It absolutely does not infect any computer. The second security measure is that it does not attack computers that have a keyboard in the Cyrillic alphabet. However, if they make a mistake, they give the victim the free encryption key and apologize.
That's because they don't want to strike in the same jurisdiction as the investigative bodies, which can investigate them.

Colonial Pipeline has all the data from us for normal running the pipeline before DarkSide "offerred" their decryption.
It's a FBI action for paying and discover the cybercriminals behind.
