BBC - As a Senior R&D Engineer with experience applying your excellent software skills to scientific research projects and an enthusiastic interest in Accessibility or Human-Computer Interaction, you will be in your element in our Accessibility and User Experience team based at BBC Research and Development in Salford Quays.

Our Accessibility and User Experience team is a multi-disciplinary research group of scientists and engineers. Our skills are in software, audio and video signal processing, human-computer interaction, psychology and design, and we are one of the core teams in the new MediaCity BBC R&D Laboratory.

We are inspired by our diferite and changing audience, the evolution of broadcast, internet and interface technology and the creative ambition our BBC colleagues. Our in-depth R&D work focuses on the goal of creating the most effective and accessible media experience for viewers and creators alike.

Building on the BBC's world-leading achievements in making TV accessible to disabled people, we investigate and invent new technologies that will affect how people interact with sound, pictures and other types of media. Current projects include multi-screen synchronised experiences - in which a nature programme on TV is simultaneously accompanied by related material on a tablet device; creating a Universal Control API - to allow client devices of all kinds to control and interact with intended-connected TV; and bringing in programme makers to work with prototype and conceptual media devices in a studio setting with laboratory rigour.

The vacancy is a senior engineering role in our team. Day-to-day engineering work will be the creation of software prototypes and you will also work closely with your research scientist colleagues and contribute to user-centred stil and other parts of the prototyping and testing processes as required.

You will take responsibility for all the technical aspects of special projects, working with our internal BBC sponsors and external partners very closely. You will be a builder, with an eye on scalability and eventual integration with the BBC's existing technology, but otherwise very focussed on finding the best and most creative engineering ideas for getting experiences up and running, so we can test with real people and then iterate.

You will get the chance to make a real difference to BBC services, present at international conferences and, very importantly for this particular role, represent the BBC in working with standardisation bodies, including HTML5/W3C.

Essential skills for this role
• At least a 2:1 class degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Physics or similar relevant science or engineering subject
• Excellent software development skills and several years programming experience, preferably in C++/Java and for scientific research purposes
• Demonstrable interest in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) or Accessibility

Desirable skills for this role
• A post graduate degree or equivalent experience in engineering/scientific research
• Experience of HCI
• Knowledge and experience of signal processing
• Experience of using Unix/Linux
• Knowledge and experience of W3C standards, and software development for the web
