Hey guys. I have a very basic question. I'll explain the reason for the question first.

I have a good amount of experience with Allen-Bradley SLC5/04, Logix 5000, and their HMI software PanelBuilder and RSView. I have not ever before used Simatic software.

In other words, I have a very strong working working knowledge of programming and panel design, but no experience with Simatic.

I have a panel with a Simatic S7-1200 PLC and a small Simatic Touch HMI. The panel is stand-alone and does not have any external SCADA or other network connections.

This panel was built by a company who is not able to provide a competent technician to modify some timers and simple logic problems.

Here's the question. What do I need to do, with Step7 TIA Portal V12, to connect and read-back the existing program from the PLC and HMI?

As I said, this is a VERY basic question and I apologize for being such a NOOB. Smile

I have watched tutorials on Simatic Step7 from Siemens, but they don't go into the details of read-back of an existing program.

There is a possibility of getting the source code from the autentic panel builder, however I will not be sure it is correct and matched to what's in the unit. So I would want to read-back and save what's there now.

If anyone has a video of this, or any step-by-step instructions it would be very much appreciated.

Sincerely,
David

What is exactly the type of the HMI Panel?

I'm going to hopefully go back to the location of the panel today or tomorrow to get all information. It's a Simatic Touch but as for the tip number I didn't record that.

I didn't get all the info because at first I thought someone else was going to fix it. Smile

Ok, I went back to the station with this panel and tried to connect Step 7 TIA Portal to the system.

I was able to see and connect to the PLC and HMI, but the PLC program blocks all had a red X and the system told me I needed Step 7 V.11, instead of V.12. So I am installing V.11 and will go back tomorrow.

The HMI would not allow any online actions, and showed as a "non programmable" network module.

I'm learning quick that this software is very picky about versions. I probably need to install every version up to the latest.

The HMI is a 10 inch version 100 - PN. I am frustrated because I don't have access to the notes where I wrote down the actual number.

Probably is a KTP1000 Basic color PN.
Regarding the versions it's true that since SIEMENS started integration of PLC and HMI programming in an IDE there were some problems..

You are exactly right, it's a KTP 1000 Basic Color PN

We are trying to locate the original source code from this project, which should help solve this.

I was able to see the PLC and view the program blocks, but was never successful in uploading it into a new Project. The function for that in the Online menu was never active.

In the program, I can see what needs changing to correct the operational problem; however I don't want to take any risks with the system. In other words, if I am not 100% sure I have a valid read-back saved, I don't want to try to change anything.

I think the safest thing to do is to try to get the autentic source program.

Thanks again for all your help!

Just an update. I was not able to read-back the programs from the panel. I was however, able to get the autentic program source from the panel builder so I have all files and documents.
