Activate trace for WinCC OPC UA DA (certificates)
https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/document/109826080/

How do I configure and enable the trace for OPC UA Data Access (certificate-based) in SIMATIC WinCC V7/V8?
Description
WinCC provides a certificate-based OPC UA Data Access client in the form of the "OPC UA WinCC Channel", which you can use to establish connections to OPC UA servers. In this context, if problems occur with the function or the configured OPC connection does not behave as expected, with WinCC V7.4 SP1 and higher you can make a trace recording of the OPC communication between the WinCC OPC UA channel and the OPC UA server used. Instructions on how to enable the trace for the WinCC OPC DA channel (DCOM-based) are available in Entry 99412077.

The following instructions are recommended for configuring the trace settings if recording of OPC UA communication is required. The following Use cases are distinguished:

Problems when browsing the OPC UA server
In this case, a UaConfigServer trace is required. The relevant configuration file is usually available here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Siemens\WinCC\opc\UAClient\UaConfigServer\CCOpcUaImporter.xml

WinCC OPC UA channel does not establish a connection to the OPC UA server when WinCC Runtime is started.
In this case, a UaDAS trace is required. The relevant configuration file is usually available here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Siemens\WinCC\opc\UAClient\UaDAS\CcUaDAS.xml

Notes
Take into account that trace recording requires corresponding computer resources and can noticeably impair the performance of the WinCC application.
Please note that the structure of the XML configuration files has been changed with WinCC V8.0. With V8.0 and higher, all trace parameters are located in the <Trace> element.
Instructions

The procedure described below applies equally to the following:
UaConfigServer trace (certificate: "Siemens OPC UA Tag Importer for WinCC")
UaDAS trace (certificate: "Siemens OPC UA Client for WinCC Runtime").
Terminate WinCC Runtime and close the WinCC project. Copy the XML file required for your application in the above path and rename it accordingly, for example to "CCOpcUaImporter-Original.xml", in order to restore the original file later. Configure the XML file by changing the values of the trace parameters in the respective <element> as follows:

1. Enable the trace and set the desired trace level

Start with trace level "error"/"Errors". If it is clear where to start, deepen the trace with "info"/"Info".

<Trace>
<TraceEnable>true</TraceEnable>
<TraceLevel>error</TraceLevel>

In WinCC V8.0 and higher:
<Trace>
<UaAppTraceEnabled>true</UaAppTraceEnabled>
<UaAppTraceLevel>Errors</UaAppTraceLevel>

2. The higher the trace level, the greater the number of log files and entries should be.

Change the value for the number of log files to 10, for example.
The number of entries should be between 100,000 and max. 200,000. 100k lines are faster to open in Notepad than 200k lines. If the value is greater than 200k, it may take an hour or more to open the file.

<TraceMaxBackFiles>10</TraceMaxBackFiles>
<MaxRecords>100000</MaxRecords>

In WinCC V8.0 and higher:
<UaAppTraceMaxEntries>100000</UaAppTraceMaxEntries>
<UaAppTraceMaxBackup>10</UaAppTraceMaxBackup>

3. Leave the storage location of the trace files in the project directory as the default setting to make them easier to find:

<TraceFile>[WinCCProjectFolder]\OPC\UaClient\Trace\[ModuleName].txt</TraceFile>

In WinCC V8.0 and higher:
<UaAppTraceFile>[WinCCProjectFolder]\OPC\UaClient\Trace\[ModuleName].log</UaAppTraceFile>

4. Add the following lines to the trace element (before <Trace>), for
Connecting servers:

<TraceMessage>FindServers</TraceMessage>
<TraceMessage>GetEndpoints</TraceMessage>

Browsing:
<TraceMessage>Browse</TraceMessage>
<TraceMessage>BrowseNext</TraceMessage>
<TraceMessage>RegisterNodes</TraceMessage>
<TraceMessage>UnregisterNodes</TraceMessage>

Tags:
<TraceMessage>Read</TraceMessage>
<TraceMessage>Write</TraceMessage>

Archived Tags:
<TraceMessage>HistoryRead</TraceMessage>
<TraceMessage>HistoryUpdate</TraceMessage>

Save the XML file with the autentic file name. Open the WinCC project or start WinCC Runtime with a configured OPC UA connection to enable the trace.

Warning

After completing the examination, you absolutely must disable the trace again so that the original performance is restored:

To do this, terminate WinCC Runtime and close the WinCC project. Delete the XML file configured for the trace or save it under a different file name. Finally, rename the copy of the original file accordingly, for example "CCOpcUaImporter-Original.xml" to "CCOpcUaImporter.xml".
