Due to the limited EPC and user memory on UHF transponders, it is necessary in some cases to store the EPC ID or user data with a 6-bit encoding on the transponder. The SIMATIC RF600 series readers support 6-bit coding according to VDA 5500 ("RFID for the identification of vehicles in production, logistics and services").

This example shows how to handle the 6-bit data in an S7-1200/1500 Controller. A SIMATIC RF615R reader is connected to a SIMATIC S7-1500 via PROFINET. TIA Portal V18 is used as the development environment.

The following use cases are presented:
Initializing a transponder with a 6-bit coded EPC ID
Reading EPC IDs (formatted with 6-bit VDA 5500 characters) and converting them into an array of 8-bit ASCII characters
Writing the user memory of the transponder 6-bit VDA coded (header + data)
Read user memory of the transponder (6-bit VDA coded) and output readable user data (8-bit ASCII)
Each use case has its own function block and the corresponding instance data block. You can operate the use cases via ready-made tag tables.

The application example uses the conversion blocks of the "LIIDF" library and the identification blocks of the TIA Portal library "Option Packages/SIMATIC Ident". The "LIIDF" library can be found in the "Download" section of this article.
