Protective door monitoring with tumbler through 3SE64 RFID safety switch to SIL 2 or PL d with a 3SK2 safety

Protective doors are frequently used to fence off danger zones. These are monitored for position and, if necessary, the area from which the hazard emanates is switched off. If the machine continues to present a hazard even after switching off, access can be prevented for this period by a tumbler.

Operating priciple
The position of a protective door is monitored via a safety switch. In addition, the door is locked via the safety switch. If the command to unlock the door is issued, the safety relay triggers and opens the enabling circuits, switching off the power contactors in a safety-related manner. The tumbler is unlocked after expiry of a set time. If the door is closed and locked, and the feedback circuit is closed, the Start button can be used to switch on again.

The 3SE64 RFID safety switch with tumbler is available in two variants, which differ in the control principle of the interlocking function (closed-circuit/open-circuit principle).

For both variants, SIL 3 or PL e is possible for the safety function "protective door monitoring". While SIL 2 or PL d can be achieved for the safety function "interlocking" in variant 1 (closed-circuit principle), no SIL / PL is possible for the interlocking in variant 2 (open-circuit principle) – in this variant, the interlocking is used exclusively for process protection.

In this application example, variant 1 is used because SIL 2 or PL d is required for the safety function "interlocking".
With variant 1, the RFID feedback (OSSD outputs of the 3SE64) is only activated as soon as interlocking has been properly executed. In this case, the interlocking is also monitored and it can be evaluated in the user program whether the door is actually locked or not, which takes into account the diagnostic requirements for SIL 2 or PL d.
